From Microbes to Marketing – Why I Chose The Laptop Over A Lab

Once upon a time, there was a little girl who loved books more than dolls. As she grew older, curiosity led her to study science. But she never closed the door on literature and always ran to books and stories when overwhelmed with reality. This love for the written word never really left her heart and not even earning two degrees in microbiology could replace this adoration…

Back in 2013, while I was knocking on the doors of research institutes, laboratories, and other such companies to get a decent opportunity in biological sciences, I got a call from a classmate about a job opportunity in the digital marketing agency where she worked as a content writer. She knew about my passion for reading and knack for creative writing. The role was the same as hers – to write engaging content for different client websites. I was perplexed. On one hand, I wanted to grab the opportunity with all four limbs as it meant I could continue my love affair with words and make a living out of it. But on the other hand, it meant saying goodbye to a “promising” career dealing with microscopes and microbes, my companions for over 5 years. At a time when digital marketing was not even considered a permanent, legitimate choice of career by a majority of people around me, my parents encouraged me to go ahead and give it a try. That was the only push I needed. I took up the role of a content writer and have not looked back since!

Over the span of 8 years, I have immersed myself completely in the world of content and digital. And have not regretted leaving the world of microbiology behind! I have witnessed the evolution of digital marketing from an upcoming field to a booming sector and am proud to have grown as a professional in this exciting discipline. I got to marry my first love and can happily say, “I love my work.” From entering this area as a novice and leading a content team, back in India, to working as a freelance content marketer and setting up my own business in the UK, this journey has been nothing short of incredible. And it has only just begun!
